What Does Being Fit Really Mean?

When you hear the words “getting fit”, what springs to mind?

Running? Going to the gym? Lifting weights? Perhaps you immediately think, “That’s not for me. I’m not fit enough.”

But you don’t have to be fit to start exercising. You get fitter by starting.

Fitness is about everyday life

For most of us, being fit isn’t about running a marathon or lifting the heaviest weights.

It’s about having the strength, mobility, balance and stamina to enjoy everyday life.

Getting up from a chair comfortably. Walking to the shops. Climbing the stairs. Gardening. Playing with the grandchildren. Going out for the day without feeling that your body is holding you back.

All of that is fitness.

Find the movement that works for you

There isn’t one type of exercise that’s right for everyone.

You might love the music and energy of Zumba, prefer the lower impact style of Zumba Gold, enjoy working on strength and mobility with Fitness Pilates or find that Seated Exercise is a better way for you to keep moving.

My 1-to-1 Reformer Pilates sessions are another option, with exercises, resistance and range of movement adapted to the individual.

The important thing isn’t what somebody else is doing. It’s finding something that works for you – and that you enjoy.

“But I’m really unfit…”

You don’t need to get fit before joining a class. Start where you are. Take things at your own pace, make movements smaller, leave out the jumps or take a break when you need one.

Over time, you may notice everyday things becoming a little easier, perhaps you’re less breathless, feel stronger on the stairs, have better balance or simply don’t feel quite as stiff.

Those little changes matter.

Just keep moving

Exercise doesn’t have to be a punishment and it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Dance. Stretch. Walk. Strengthen. Find something you enjoy and keep doing it.

I teach Zumba, Zumba Gold, Fitness Pilates and Seated Exercise in Faversham, as well as private 1-to-1 Reformer Pilates sessions.

You don’t need to get fit first.

Start where you are and we’ll go from there.
